Diversion

Early support that helps youth and families address concerns before juvenile justice involvement grows.

Available in

Bismarck | Fargo | Minot | Grand Forks

For Young People

Sometimes problems at school, conflict at home, or other things happening in your life can start pulling you toward the juvenile justice system even though you haven’t committed a delinquent offense. Diversion is a chance to get support before that involvement goes further. After a referral, Youthworks will meet with you and your caregiver to talk about what is happening, what you’re already good at, what you want to change, and what support could help. You may work individually with staff, participate in skill-building activities, or both. That can include managing emotions and impulses, making decisions, communicating with family, staying connected to school, setting goals, and building relationships with supportive adults. The point isn’t to punish you. It’s to help you move forward. If you think Diversion might apply to you, contact Youthworks or ask an adult supporting you about making a referral.

For Parents, Caregivers & Community Partners

Youthworks’ Diversion program provides early support for youth whose circumstances or behavior may place them more deeply involved with the juvenile justice system but who have not committed a delinquent offense. Youth may be experiencing school disengagement or truancy, persistent family conflict, chronic disobedience or defiance, or other concerns that meet Child in Need of Services criteria. Youthworks begins by identifying the youth’s strengths, priorities, and support needs with the youth and caregiver. Services combine individualized support and family engagement with skill-building focused on emotional regulation, impulse control, decision-making, relationships, school engagement, and goals identified with the youth. Schools, Human Service Zones, and other community partners can refer youth to Diversion. Contact Youthworks to discuss eligibility or make a connection.
